The Israel – Families from Dillich (near Borken in Hessen)


In the middle of the 18th century there lived two Israel-families in Dillich –

Nathan Chajim Heinemann Israel, born December 1755 and David Israel and his son Heinemann Chajim David Israel, born ~ 1765.

They might have a common ancestor who possibly is Chajim Heinemann Israel (Judenspezifikation von 1744, Archives of Marburg Abt.5, Nr. 2347, Bl. 239 ff., printed as “Die hessische Judenstättigkeit von 1744” from Karl E. Demandt, in: Hessisches Jahrbuch für Landesgeschichte, 23. Band, Marburg 1973, S.292-313)

Chajim Heinemann Israel married Merle. Chajim Heinemann and Merle Israel had two sons:

He married first Schoenchen, nee Schloss, born ~ 1814 from Allendorf an der Landsburg 28.12.1841 (marriage-list Nr.13). She was the daughter of the merchant Lipmann Schloss, died September 1824, and his wife Merle, nee Hoexter, born ~ 1789. Schoenchen Israel died 15.04.1848 (death-list No.28). Benedikt Nathan Israel married second time Dorette / Deiche, nee Blumenthal, born September 1822 from Sontra. She was the daughter of the merchant Daniel Blumenthal and his wife Roeschen, nee Lorge. Daniel Blumenthal died 07.12.1873 in Dillich (death-list No.48), 93 years, 1 month, 20 days old (born ~ 1780, death-list No. 48). Benedikt and Dorette/Deiche Israel had six children:

Joseph Katz married to Hannchen, nee Rosengarten, born ~ 1815 from Schiffelbach, the daughter of Mendel Rosengarten, born ~ 1779 and his wife Berhle, nee Anschul, born ~ 1781. Joseph and Hannchen Katz married 28.09.1837 (marriage.list No. 6). They had nine children:

He was teacher in Dillich from January 1849 till 1854 (Dreytza/Faecke, Spuren jüdischen Lebens im Kreis Homberg, S.66). Michael und Marjane Fachenhain had a daughter:

Nanny Israel moved to Frankfurt am Main, she was deported from there to Theresienstadt and perished 10.04.1943 (Central Database of Shoah Victims´Names of Yad Vashem).



FOURTH GENERATION :

A 22. Benjamin Israel, born 27.10.1866. He married on 02.11.1892 Emilie Ferse, born 17.04.1863 in Oberlistingen, daughter of Selig Ferse and his second wife Rika, née Schulhof from Höringhausen. Selig Ferse, born 1811, son of Itzig Ferse and his wife Beschen, née Eichholz married Rika Schulhof born in Apirl 1823, daughter of Salomon Schulhof and his wife Liebchen, née Boehm on 24.06.1862. He was married first to Marianne Eichholz. Benjamin and Emilie Israel lived in Oberlistingen house no. 99. They had four sons:

A 24. Jettchen (Henriette) Israel, born 13.02.1872, was married on 23.05.1894 in Dillich to Israel Julius Weinberg, born 04.03.1856 in Rheda, son of Salomon Weinberg and his wife Bertha, née Cohn. Jettchen / Henriette and Isreal Julius Weinberg lived in Rheda. Jettchen Weinberg emigrated on 09.11.1938 into the Netherlands. She was deported in 1942 from the Netherlands to Auschwitz and murdered there on 19.10.1942.


A 25. Berta Israel, born 11.05.1874, was married on 14.09.1903 in Dillich to Moses Roozendaal, born 03.11.1873 in Denekamp, son of Ephraim Roozendaal and his wife Hendrina, née Elkus from Nordhorn. Berta and Moses Roozendaal lived in Nordhorn. Berta Roozendaal emigrated on 12.05.1939 into the Netherlands. She was arrested on 09.04.1943 in Vught-Hertogenbosch and on 09.05.1943 in Westerbork. She was deported from there on 14.09.1943 to Auschwitz and murdered there 17.09.1943.


A 26. Hannchen Israel, born 31.10.1875 in Dillich, she was married on 14.01.1907 in Dillich to David Israel, born 04.03.1874 in Dillich, son of Mendel / Menachem Iasrael and his wife Sara, née Bickhardt (No. B 22 of this genealogy). Hannchen and David Israel had a son:


+ A 57. / B 32. Martin Israel, born 11.07.1908 in Dillich.


David Israel died on 25.11.1923 in Dillich. He is bureid on the Jewish cemetery of Haarhausen, grave no. 308.


A 31. Saara Israel, born 10.09.1868, was married to Gerson Magnus, born 04.09.1868. He was a bathhouse-attendant (Bademeister).They lived in Hamburg, they were deported vom Hamburg to Theresienstadt 16.07.1942 (Transport VI/1). Gerson Magnus perished 11.08.1942, Sara Magnus 01.10.1942 in Theresienstadt. There are pages of testimony in Yad Vashem written 01.12.1978 by the niece (Nichte) Margarete Weglein from New York.


A 34. Moses / Moshe Moritz Israel, born 09.06. 1874, died 1962. He married Gita Bachrach, born February 1871, died 1951. They had a daughter:

+ A 58 Marga / Margarete Israel, born 1905 in Hamburg.


A 35. Leiser (Levie) Israel, born 08.03.1876. He lived in Burgsteinfurth.He emigrated on 18.11.1938 into the Netherlands and was deported on 24.11.1942 from Westerbork to Auschwitz. He was murdered there 27.11.1942.


A 36. Fanny Israel, born 12.12.1878, was married to Jacob Robert, born 24.08.1876 in Graudenz (Poland). He was the son of Nathan Robert and his wife Pauline. Fanny and Jacob Robert lived in Essen, they had a son:


+ A 59. Heinz Robert.


Fanny and Jacob Robert were deported from Dortmund on 29.07.1942 to Theresienstadt, where Jacob Robert perished 30.12.1942. Fanny Israel was deported from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz and perished there 10.07.1944. She was declared as dead on 27.11.1952 (Standesamt Berlin I 774/1952). Their son Heinz Robert wrote pages of testimony for his parents 13.05.1989 (Yad Vashem).


A 37. Jetchen Israel, born 30.09.1880, lived in Hamburg. She was deported from Hamburg on 19.07.1942 to Theresienstadt and from there to Auschwitz on 23.01.1943. She was declared as dear on 22.03.1954 (Standesamt Berlin I 49845/1954). Her niece Margarete Weglein from New York wrote a page of testimony 01.12.1978 (Yad Vashem).

A 38. Rose / Rosa Israel, born 30.09.1880, was married to N. N. Katz. They lived in Koeln. Rosa Katz was deported from Koeln to Theresienstadt with the transport III/5 18.09.1942. and from there 1944 to Auschwitz where she perished 13.02.1944. Alex Salm (researcher) wrote a page of testimony 31.01.2000 (Yad Vashem u. Die jüdischen Opfer des Nationalsozialismus aus Koeln. Gedenkbuch, Koeln 1995. S.231).

A 41. Nathan Israel, born 04.05.1869, married Johanna, nee Neuhaus, born 14.11.1869 in Guxhagen. She was the daughter of Moses Neuhaus and Sara. Nathan and Johanna lived in Dillich. In 1924 Nathan Israel was the head of the Jewish community in Dillich (Gemeindevorsteher)


Nathan and Johanna Israel had four children:

A 61. Greta Israel, born 23.09.1902 in Dillich, she emigrated on 07.05.1939

to Mancester, GB (Helmut Thiele, a.a.O.p. 677).

A 62. Berni Israel, born 21.12.1905 in Dillich, she emigrated on 07.05.1939

to Mancester GB (Helmut Thiele, a.a.O., p.677).

+ A 63. Max Israel, born 28.07.1909.


In 1938 the family moved to Kassel and lived there: 17.05.1938: Moltkestraße 7, 28.07.1941: Jaegerstraße 7, 02.02.1942: Mittelgasse 53.

Nathan Israel, his wife Johanna and their son Max were arrested in Breitenau (Guxhagen) at 11.04.1941, Nathan till 25.07.1941 and Johanna till 29.10.1941. They came back to Kassel. Max was deported to Sachsenhausen 26.09.1941. He perished 15.01.1942. (Archives of Breitenau Memorial).

Nathan and Johanna Israel were deported from Kassel to Minsk 07.09.1942. Johanna Israel is missed (Namen und Schicksale der Juden Kassels 1933-1945. Ein Gedenkbuch. Kassel 1986. S.201). Nathan Israel perished in Treblinka 29.09.1942 (Deytza/Faecke, S.196) or in Minsk.


A 43. Bine /Biene Israel, born 11.10.1873 in Dillich. She was married on 21.01.1902 in Dillich to Albert Mathias, cattle dealer in Hofgeismar, born 20.08.1873 in Koerbecke, son of Sally Mathias and his wife Lisette, née Goldberg. He lived till 1902 in Liebenau. Biene and Albert Mathias lived in Hofgeismar Toepfenmarkt no.5. They had five children:

In the 30th Albert was forced to give up his business, Biene and Albert Mathias moved on 27.06.1939 to Dortmund, Leopoldstrasse 49. A 44. Jettchen (Jette) Israel, born 17.12.1875, she was a nurse and lived in Kassel since January 1923. Most time she lived together with his brother Bernhardt Israel and his family. She was deported 07.09.1942 from Kassel to Theresienstadt, where she perished 22.02.1944 (Namen und Schicksale der Juden Kassels. Ein Gedenkbuch. S.115).


A 45. Moritz / Hermann Israel, born 07.05.1878 in Dillich. He married on 31.12.1906 in Dillich Flora Lehrberger, born 06.11.1883 in Borken, daughter of Siemon Lehrberger and his wife Roeschen, née Nussbaum. Moritz / Hermann and Roeschen Israel had three children:

A 70. Edith Israel, born 09.04.1912 in Dillich, she emigrated on 06.09.1939 to New

Mardorf, born 12.08.1884, daughter of Salomon Geiss and his wife

Bertha, nee Schaumberg. Heinemann and Emma Israel lived in

A 72. Kurt Israel, born 13..03.1910 in Mardorf. He went to Kassel

29.09.1938, lived there in Jaegerstrasse 7, from 28.01.1942 in

Schillerstrasse 7 and was deported from Kassel to Majdanek /

Lublin on 01.06.1942, where he perished on 27.09.1942.

Emma Israel died on 22.04.1938 in Mardorf, Heinemann Israel went to Kassel on 29.09.1938, he was deported to Auschwitz, survived and came back to Kirchhain in 1945. He lived there with his daughter Ilse and died 30.06.1950. (Standesamt Marburg 506/1950)


A 47. Bernhardt Israel, born 30.06.1886, lived in Kassel since 16.01.1904. He married about 1920 Ada Robert, born 19.09.1897 in Graudenz. Bernhardt and Ada Israek lived in Kassel Untere Königstrasse 83, later in Ulmenstrasse 15, Annastraße 13 and 1933 in Herkulesstrasse 107. They had a daughter:


+ A 74. Liesel Lore Israel, born 11.06.1922 in Kassel.


They were deported from Kassel to Majdanek 01.06.1942 and murdered on 03.06.1942 in Sobibor. (Yad Vashem u. Namen und Schicksale der Juden Kassels 1933-1945, p. 114) Bernhardt Israel was declared as dead in 1963 (Standesamt Berlin I 7364/1963).


A 49. Jetchen / Jette Israel, born 03.09.1886, she was married on 11.12.1909 in Dillich to Salli Bachrach, born 12.12.1884 in Mansbach, son of Kullmann Bachrach and his wife Ewa, née Tannenwald. They emigrated to Buenos Aires, Argentina.


A 50. Heinemann / Heinrich Israel, born 07.06.1888 in Dillich. He lived in Rueddingshausen and Frankfurt/Main, he was deported from Frankfurt/Main on 15.09.1942 to Theresienstadt and murdered there on 16.06.1943.


A 51. Dora Israel, born 11.04.1891, was married on 12.09.1921 in Dillich to Sally Wolff, born 19.05.1885 in Schöndorf, Kreis Bromberg/Poland. He was the son of Wilhelm Wolff and his wife Johanna, nee Hyman. Sally and Dora Wolff have three children:

A 54. Hermann Israel, born 02.05.1896 in Oberlistingen. He lived in Hannover and Beverungen. He emigrated on 23.12.1938 into the Netherlands. He was arrested from 28.03.1940 – 04.09.1944 in Westerbork and deported from there on 04.09.1944 to Theresienstadt and from there on 29.09.1944 to Auschwitz.


A 55. Gottfried Israel, born 27.05.1900 in Oberlistingen. He married Elsbeth, née Hess. Gottfried and Elsbeth Israel lived in Duisburg. They had a daughter:


+ A 78. Eva Israel, born 1936 in Duisburg.


Gottfried Israel emigrated on 03.10.1939 to Belgium. He was deported on 10. or 15.05.1940 to St Cyprien, from there to Drancy and on 10.08.1942 to Auschwitz, where he was murdered.

A 57. / B 32. Martin Israel, born 11.07.1908 in Dillich. He married on 01.02.1933 in Kassel Hanna Teitelbaum, born 11.11.1905 in Lancut/Galizien (Helmut Thiele, a.a.O., p. 579).


A 58. Margarete Israel, born 1905 in Hamburg. She was married to Sally Weglein, born 23.07.1898. A 63. Max Israel, born 28.07.1909 in Dillich. He lived in Kassel: 17.05.1938 Moltkestraße 7 28.07.1941 Jaegerstraße 7. He was arrested in Breitenau (Guxhagen) 11.04.1941 – 26.09.1941. He was deported from there to Sachsenhausen where he perished 15.01.1942.


A 64. Erich Mathias, born 29.10.1902 in Hofgeismar,he married in 1928 Kathinka Goldmeier, from Uttrichshausen. Erich and Kathinka Mathias lived in Fulda, Loeherstrasse no. 24. They had a son:

On 02.10.1936 they emigtared to Chicago. Kathinka Mathias died in October 1995.


A 65. Ernst Mathias, born 17.06.1905 in Hofgeismar, he moved on 17.09.1920 to Warburg and on 03.09.1924 to Bad Wildungen, where he lived with the merchant Siegmund Katz. He married Lena Goldmeier, born 06.12.1899 in Uttrichshausen. On 07.03.1939 they moved to Dortmund, Muensterstrasse 28 and emigrated to Chicago. Ernst und Lena Mathias had a son:

A 67. Elsa/Else Mathias, born 27.04.1910 in Hofgeismar. She was married to Max Machol, carpenter, born 24.07.1902 in Mrotschen (Mrocza) /Wirsitz / Polen. Elsa and Max Machol moved on 01.07.1937 to Dortmund and were deported on 27.01.1942 from Dortmund to Riga. From there Elsa Machol was deported on 09.08.1944 to Stutthof, Max Machol on 01.10.1944.


A 68. Edith Mathias, born 14,08.1913 in Hofgeismar. She moved on 11.08.1929 to Nidda, on 01.11.1931 to Frohnhausen/ Warburg,on 27.09.1934 to Wrexen and on 15.05.1935 to Dortmund, Lindenforststrasse 237. From 27.06.1939 she lived with her parents in Leopoldstrasse 49. Fate unknown.

A 73. Ilse Israel, born 10.02.1915 in Mardorf, she lived in Kassel from 1931/32. She was

deported on 07.09.1942 from Kassel to Theresienstadt / Terezin, survived

and came back to Kirchhain on 12.05.1945. She married Leo Flachsmann

from Kirchhain, born 16.10.1895. He died 21.07.1954.


A 74. Liesel Lore Israel, born 11.06.1922 in Kassel (Namen und Schicksale der Juden Kassels. S. 115). From 1932 she was pupil on the Malwida von Meysenbug School in Kassel. In 1937 she was forced to leave the school. She went to Cologne 11.09.1937, back to Kassel 01.04.1939, from 01.04.1940 – 17.09.1941 she went four times to Berlin. Possibly she was married in Berlin to N. N. Wolff . The only one document about her life in Berlin is the deportation list of the 31th deportation from Berlin-Moabit to Auschwitz on 01.03.1943.She is listed as Liesel Lore Woff, née Israel, living in Berlin Chausseestrasee 18 (as subtenant) list no. 1376. She was married on 20.02.1899 in Dillich to Samuel Heilbronn, born 20.08.1873 in Gemmerich, son of Loeb Heilbronn and his wife Fanny née Michlstein. Johanette and Samuel Heilbronn lived in Frankfurt/Main. They were deported on 15,09,1942 from Frankfurt/Main to Theresienstadt and murdered there on 02.02.1943.
